Improvement isn't a one-off project, but a continuous rhythm

Toyota receives millions of improvement suggestions from its employees annually. The vast majority do not come from managers. They come from people on the shop floor. From those who do the work every day and know exactly where improvements need to be made.

What makes Toyota special is not that they collect these ideas, but primarily the way they do it.

No bonus structure. No competition. No reward system.

Research by Daniel Pink and economists from the London School of Economics shows that financial incentives for creative and cognitive work often backfire. They narrow the focus too much and turn improvement into a transaction instead of a habit.

Toyota's system — the Kaizen-Teian system — works because it creates a culture of attention. Small improvements are quickly evaluated. Feedback follows within 24 hours. Ideas are taken seriously, even if they are not implemented.

The system itself is therefore the reward. Not a poster on the wall, but a deeply ingrained implementation mechanism.

And here lies the lesson for organizations.

Improvement is not a project. It's not an initiative with a start date and a completion. Improvement is a rhythm. It demands structure over inspiration. It demands ownership over enthusiasm. It demands a system that catches small signals before they become big problems.

It works the same way in OGSM. When you deviate from the plan, the question is whether you have a system that makes the deviation visible, discussable, and translates it into concrete adjustments.
